Forgiveness is a deeply personal journey between you and God. It requires reflection, intention, and an open heart. During moments of quiet—whether before sleep, upon waking or during some free time —consider these steps to embrace forgiveness fully and profoundly.
A Guided Exercise in Forgiveness
Prepare Your Heart: Begin with prayer, asking God to soften your heart and guide you toward readiness to forgive.
Gather Your Materials: Take a pack of 4x6 index cards and a pen or pencil.
Acknowledge the Trespass: On one side of each card, write down the specific wrong committed against you.
Identify the Person(s): On the other side, write the name of the individual(s) responsible for that trespass.
Reflect on the Pain: Read both sides of the card, then close your eyes. Allow yourself to remember the incident and the person involved.
Feel the Emotions: Honor your feelings—anger, hurt, fear, loneliness, disappointment—whatever arises. Let them surface without judgment.
Visualize the Encounter: Picture yourself seated across from the person who wronged you. Keep your eyes closed and stay present in the moment.
Declare Forgiveness: Say aloud, with intention, “I forgive you, [insert name here].” Speak from a place of truth and willingness, even if your heart is still healing.
Repeat as Needed: Move to the next card, following the same process. If a particular trespass resurfaces emotionally, repeat the exercise until it no longer holds power over you.
After some time you can begin practicing these exercises without of the use of the cards.
